\"Jonathan_meets_obama<\/a>GLOWING<\/b> tributes have continually been poured on Africa\u2019s most populous nation-Nigeria for yet becoming a year older, as today marks the 53rd<\/sup> Independence Anniversary of the nation. Of special mention is Barack Obama, President of United States (US) who has commended the nation and went down memory lane on historical partnership between the two countries.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In his congratulatory statement, Obama commended President Goodluck Jonathan and the people of Nigeria as the nation celebrates 53rd anniversary of her Independence Day on Oct.1.<\/p>\n

His words: \u201cA warm friendship connects the Nigerian and American people, reflecting our shared values of democracy, economic growth, security, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.<\/p>\n

Obama in a press statement issued by Secretary of State, John Kerry said on Monday said:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur partnership is strong because of our people, as the proverb tells us, if you want to go quickly go alone, if you want to go far go together.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that in the coming years, the U.S. would be looking forward to going further with Nigeria as the country expands education, jobs and opportunity for its people.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the 53rd anniversary of your independence, I wish all Nigerians a safe and prosperous future,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the historic city, New York, Nigerians and friends of Nigeria from around the world are gearing up to celebrate the anniversary of Nigeria\u2019s Independence.<\/p>\n

The celebration is scheduled from Oct.3 to 5 with activities ranging from party for young Nigerians and their friends, to a cultural night where the youth would demonstrate appreciation of their Nigerian heritage.<\/p>\n
