Ewansiha died last week apparently of seizure in his\nsleep, while in detention at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nIn\nhis reaction, Director-General of the Immigration Department, Khairul\nDzaimee, said that he was still awaiting the post-mortem report of\nEwansiha, as well as a full medical report to identify the cause of\ndeath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nDzaimee\nclaimed that Ewansiha was among 20 foreigners picked up in an\noperation on July 4 at Desa Aman Puri in Kuala Lumpur, following\ntip-offs from the public and had attempted to flee during the\noperation but was captured. He later produced his passport and was\nfound to be holding a valid student pass upon further checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\naction of the subject in trying to escape created doubts on the\nvalidity of the student pass held by the subject,\u201d Dzaimee said.\nEwansiha was suspected of committing an offence under the Immigration\nAct. He was held for 14 days for further investigations, Dzaimee\nadded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nundergoing the documentation process at the Kuala Lumpur Immigration\noffice, he was provided with basic medical treatment by Civil Defence\nForce personnel as he had an old wound on his right leg, Dzaimee\nsaid. Ewansiha did not inform Immigration officers of any sickness,\nhe said. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsubjects detained in the operation \u2013 including Ewansiha \u2013 were\nsent to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot at about noon the next day.\nThey were treated \u201cappropriately\u201d in accordance to the standard\noperating procedure (SOP) during detention, Dzaimee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nAt\nabout 12.05am on Jul 9, the officer on duty was informed by the other\ndetainees that Ewansiha \u201csuddenly\u201d had a seizure while sleeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nSpecial Medical Unit on duty immediately examined and treated the\nsubject and contacted Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM)\nfor assistance,\u201d said Dzaimee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe\nassistant medical officer \u2013 who arrived with the ambulance at\n12.30am \u2013 examined and assisted Ewansiha, but the student was later\npronounced dead. Following the incident, the supervisor and officer\non duty lodged a report at the Bukit Jalil police station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nLimkokwing\nUniversity of Creative Technology said in a statement yesterday that\nit was informed of Ewansiha\u2019s death. The 33-year-old was pursuing a\nPhD in Management at the university and is survived by a wife and two\nchildren. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>&#8216;Malaysia\nGovernment killed my Husband&#8217;-Wife of deceased <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nwife of  Ewansiha, has lamented the death of her husband in the Bukit\nJalil detention centre earlier this week. In a video currently\ncirculating on the social media, the mournful wife of the deceased\nwho was in tears, wondered why her husband would be treated in such a\nbrutish manner to the point of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nObviously\nfilled with sadness as she cried profusely, the wife said having\nspent all he had acquiring education to PhD level, with right papers\nhe had acquired to justify his stay in Malaysia, her husband was\nstill maltreated by the immigration officers who she said allowed her\nto die like a chicken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nAccording\nto reports, Ewansiha\u2019s death in custody after being detained by\nMalaysian immigration authorities, sparked protests at the Nigerian\nembassy in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nImmigration Department in a statement issued Friday (July 12) said\nThomas Orhions Ewansiha was arrested because he had tried to flee\nfrom its officers during a raid on July 4. Despite producing a valid\nstudent pass, his attempt to escape led to him being detained for 14\ndays at the Bukit Jalil depot for further investigations and to\nverify the authenticity of his documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nTwenty\nforeigners were arrested at the raid on apartments in Desa Aman Puri\nin Kuala Lumpur, which were carried out after the department received\nreports of African nationals who were suspected of not having valid\ndocuments. Local residents had also complained about drug use,\nprostitution and public intoxication in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe\nauthorities said Ewanshiha died after apparently suffering a seizure\nwhile in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt\naround 12.05am on July 9, the officers on duty were told by the other\ndetainees that the subject had had a seizure in his sleep,\u201d said\nImmigration Department director-general Khairul Dzaimee Daud in the\nstatement. \u201cImmediate aid and medical checks were conducted and the\nhospital was contacted to assist as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nMedical\npersonnel from Universiti Kebangsaan Hospital arrived at 12.30am to\nhelp him, after which Ewanshiha was then pronounced dead. The\nLimkokwing University of Creative Technology in Selangor said it was\ninformed of the death of its student Ewansiha on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\na statement on Friday, the private university said Ewansiha, 33, was\npursuing his PhD in management, and was married with two young\nchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n&#8220;He\nwas an inspired young man. We offer our condolences to his family and\nmany close friends,\u201d it said. Ewansiha\u2019s death led to a protest\non Thursday by a group of Nigerians outside the Nigerian High\nCommission in Kuala Lumpur, which the protesters claimed had not\ntaken responsibility for the welfare of their countrymen in Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nAccording\nto the authorities, checks were conducted on Ewansiha while he was\ndetained and he was administered treatment for an old injury on his\nthigh. He did not specify any pre-existing medical illnesses, they\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe\nImmigration Department is still waiting for a full medical report on\nthe subject, as well as the exact cause of death, via a post-mortem.\nThe police said on Friday they will be increasing their presence at\nthe Nigerian High Commission following the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKL\npolice will monitor the situation and increase security by performing\nmore patrols in the area. The police will not hesitate to take action\nin preserving the peace\u201d said city police chief Mazlan Lazim in a\nstatement.
