JOEL KACHI\nBENSON, A-38-YEAR OLD NIGERIAN HAS WON THE PRESTIGIOUS LION AWARD AT\nTHE JUST CONCLUDED VENICE FILM FESTIVAL with his evergreen\ndocumentary film titled &#8216;Daughters of Chibok&#8217;. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This\nprolific documentary by this filmmaker on the missing Chibok girls\nwon best virtual reality story at the festival&#8217;s closing ceremony on\nSaturday night. The documentary, which also had its premiere at the\nfestival, tells the story of Yana Galang, whose daughter was among\nthe 276 girls kidnapped in April 2014 from their school dormitory in\nChibok, northeast Nigeria. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the\nrecords, when the Chibok girls were kidnapped, there was global\noutrage, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai called them her\n\u201csisters\u201d. Then US first lady Michelle Obama, said she saw her\n\u201cown daughters\u201d in them and and Hollywood stars lent their voices\nto the movement.. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Following\ngovernment negotiations with the terrorists, 107 of them were\neventually released, while 112 remain missing. The film&#8217;s director,\nJoel Kachi Benson, said in his acceptance speech: &#8220;With this VR\nfilm, all I wanted to do was to take the world to the women of\nChibok, who five years after their daughters had been kidnapped, are\nstill living with the incredible pain of their absence. Almost like an out of body experience. But I knew\nthis was an opportunity to remind the world that Chibok is still here\nand the story doesn&#8217;t have an ending yet. And so we must not forget.&#8221;\n<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Five\nyears on, the world appears to have forgotten and the Chibok story no\nlonger commands global attention. But one mother has not given up\nhope. Yana Galang&#8217;s daughter Rifkatu is one of those\nstill missing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every month, Galang, 51, washes and folds her daughters clothes\n&#8212; praying that she will one day be released. &#8220;Rifkatu\nmy daughter, for five years I have wept and waited, praying for you\nto return. I will not stop praying for you. I will never stop, and I\nknow that one day my prayers will be answered.&#8221; Galang says in\nthe documentary. Benson, 38, says he stumbled on making\nthe film about the missing girls out of curiosity to find out more\nabout the infamous kidnappings for himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;When the story broke out years ago, there was a lot of\ntalk about it. Some people thought it was fake; others thought it was\npolitical,&#8221; he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;I guess my original reason for making this film was\ncuriosity, I wanted to get the information myself,&#8221; he added.\nThe crew spent\nseveral days in the small village in Borno State speaking to families\nof those affected by Boko Haram abductions. The end result is an\nimmersive storytelling style that give the audience a chance to feel\nand see what the characters in the story are experiencing through\nvirtual reality. &#8220;I have always felt like my experiences in the\nnortheast were not fully captured.
