He was lively, very jovial, honest, hardworking, respectful and godly. He had no ominous sign of evil that lurked around on early days of last month, until Peter Afonuge, a-30 year old commercial motorcycle operator, popularly called ‘Okada’ in Nigeria’s parlance witnessed an invasion of his apartment by men of Nigerian Navy from Satellite Town, Lagos armed with dangerous weapons as ‘AK-47 riffles, pistols, chains and handcuffs’. These fully armed Naval officers had alleged in claims they had information that Peter was using Nigerian Navy identities to commit fraudulent act, yet they had no proof.

Peter had denied the allegation flatly and requested the Naval officers to show him an evidential ‘Search Warrant’ before his apartment could be searched, he was slapped, pinned down, beaten ‘black and blue’, wounded in the presence of his sickly, aged mother, wife, and little kids. Sanity took flight, as Peter continually screamed for help. While some of his neighbors came out, nodded their heads in shock regarding the lawlessness of the Nigerian Naval officers, another group of these armed officers forcefully entered Peter’s bedroom, ransacked everywhere by turning every of Peter’s properties upside down-all in search of evidence-yet they could not find a single evidence.

CNN iReport gathered from an Shola Olukanmi, the deceased’s neighbor that after few of the neighbors pleaded with the Naval officers, they refused, but severally used butt of A-K 47 and their iron-belt to beat Peter after been pinned down, until blood began to ooze from his mouth. In Shola’s explanation: “It is very clear that Nigerian Navy officers are the worst form of military Nigerian government parade. How can over fully armed 20 Naval officers invade an innocent man’s house, humiliate him, beat him to pulp, forcefully search his house where we ought to have a rule of law and dragged him away into their vehicle and zoomed off? What sort of a Banana Republic, and lawlessness are we practicing in Nigeria? My heart was broken seen our Nigerian military used their might to destroy an innocent Nigerian.”

Shola told CNN iReport that he led few ‘Okada’ riders to follow after the Naval officers vehicle at a close distance, but as the Naval officers arrived their Satellite Town base, their gate was shut against the and were warned to ‘back-out’ else they would be locked up in their cells and tortured. He said at this point, all of them (Peter’s neighbors) turned back and left for their homes in sadness.

Peter was immediately detained, thrown into one of the dirty cells in Naval base, without access to his family lawyer, or journalists or any help whatsoever. He was regularly beaten, tortured and was been forced under duress to confess to a crime he never committed. In spite of all the torture, CNN iReport investigation showed Peter insisted to them that he would never lie, and was ready to die in the process for standing by the truth. Severally, he was electrocuted with a hot iron for days and denied food, so he may confess. This kept continued, until Peter finally died inside the Naval base. Afraid that the worst had happened, these Naval officers secretly carried out ‘unprofessional autopsy’ under the cover of the night.

Lagos human right activist, Festus Keyamo corroborate story

In an electronic mail sent to CNN iReport by Peter’s family lawyer, Festus Keyamo, a fiery human right activist he stated that “On the 7th day of April, a group of Naval personnel stormed of late Peter Afonuge (deceased) at No 44 Aganga Williams street, Ajamgbadi, Lagos and ransacked the whole house. Until his death, deceased was a commercial motor cycle operator. The mother of Peter said the men identified themselves as personnel of the Nigerian Navy, claiming they were taking her son to their barracks for questioning in respect of an alleged impersonation and racketeering of Nigerian Navy identity cards.

“Peter’s mother directed one of her siblings to follow after the deceased so as to know where they were taking him to. The Naval officers took Peter to Naval Base, Satellite Town, Lagos. The officers did not allow Peter’s siblings near the Naval Base. When deceased did not return home after 48 hours, Bibian(Peter’s mother) visited the Naval Base herself to have a-first hand information on true state of the situation, even though she was sick. She was told to leave behind her contact details as investigation into the matter was still underway. She did same. After several other days passed, precisely on 26th April, Bibian incidented a complaint at Satellite Police Station on the missing of her son-Peter. The police assured her not to worry, they would find and bring back her son. A day after, she received a distressed phone call from one L.T Jejelowo, a Naval officer who instructed her to be in the Naval Base for an update on Peter. Only on arrival there, she was told had son died. She was allowed in company of her family members to see the lifeless body of her son at Naval Base mortuary, Satellite Town, Lagos. She wept uncontrollably seen obvious signs of electric iron used on the body of the deceased. Deceased was in perfect health before arrest, unlawfully detained by Naval Officers. On this matter, we are approaching the court to file for damages, fundamental human right abuse of our client.
