RECOGNITION<\/b> is on the way for creative cartoonists in United States, Europe, Asia and Africa-particularly endowed Nigerian cartoonists who are ready to be part of history as this year\u2019s World Press Freedom Cartoon Contest slated for May 3, 2013 under the theme: \u2018Media Freedom\u2019 has attracted the attention of the international media willing to celebrate the winners.<\/p>\n

The Media Contest Selection<\/b><\/p>\n
In a press statement addressed to Naija Standard<\/i>, <\/b>it reads \u201c<\/b>To mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3, Doha Centre for Media Freedom has organised its inaugural DCMF World Press Freedom Cartoon Contest.\u00a0The centre is looking forward to receiving cartoons from artists all over the world, depicting the theme of \u201cMedia Freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our Correspondent learnt May 3 was declared World Press Freedom Day by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly In 1993, and each year it serves as a reminder of the difficulties faced by journalists and members of the media around the world.<\/p>\n

<\/b>Expectations from Cartoon Entries<\/b><\/p>\n
Cartoons can often express stories,\u00a0news and opinions more clearly than words, and at times of conflict, cartoonists and artists are regularly among the first to be silenced.<\/p>\n
For World Press Freedom Day in 2013, Doha Centre for Media Freedom would like to honour the bravery and creativity of courageous cartoonists and journalists who use their work to battle against restrictions imposed on the media and society in general.<\/p>\n
DCMF has launched its inaugural \u201cDCMF World Press Freedom Cartoon Competition,\u201d and looks forward to seeing how cartoonists around the world depict issues related to media freedom.<\/p>\n

Criteria for entrants:<\/strong><\/p>\n1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The theme of this competition is \u201cMedia Freedom.\u201d The cartoons should capture any major events related to media freedom in 2012-2013. Suggested topics include censorship issues, crackdowns on media outlets and attacks against journalists, etc.<\/em><\/p>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This competition is open to all cartoonists from all over the world. Participants must be aged 18 and over.<\/em><\/p>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Each participant can contribute only one cartoon to the competition.<\/em><\/p>\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Any text written on the cartoon should be translated into English or Arabic.<\/em><\/p>\n5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cartoons can be either black and white or in colour.<\/em><\/p>\n6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Only original work will be accepted.<\/em><\/p>\n7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All submissions must include the name, email address, telephone number and a brief biography of the cartoonist. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Only still cartoons will be accepted.<\/em><\/p>\n9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/i>The image should be in .png. gif. Jpg or . jpeg formats only and the minimum size is 3 MB.<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n10.\u00a0\u00a0 DCMF reserves the right to reuse the received work at various platforms. The organisation does not take responsibility for returning the work to its author after the competition. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n11.\u00a0\u00a0 The size of the cartoon should be at least A4; 21 by 29.2 cm; or 8.50 by 11 inches.<\/em><\/p>\n12.\u00a0\u00a0 All submissions must be sent to<\/em>\u00a0<\/i>editor@dc4mf.org\u00a0by April<\/strong>\u00a01st\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0 <\/sup><\/i>11:59 PM AST.<\/i><\/strong><\/b><\/p>\nJury<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n1.<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A jury of five members, including award-winning cartoonists, will be presided over by the Director of Doha Centre for Media Freedom, Jan Keulen.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n2.<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The decision of the jury will be final.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
