HARD\nAND TOUGH TIMES AWAIT FOREIGNERS WHO UNLAWFULLY ENTER UNITED STATES\nOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS WHO HAD APPLIED TO STUDY IN UNIVERSITY OF\nFARMINGTON in Michigan, United States. This is due to the fact that\nthe university is non-existent, a phony trap sets up by officials of\nUnited States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, whose major\nroles as undercover agents are to know the immigration status of any\nforeigner who had paid a non-refundable school’s tuition fees and\napplied to study in the fake college. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\nits website, the University of\nFarmington advertised an innovative STEM curriculum that would\nprepare students to compete in the global economy, and flexible class\nschedules that would allow them to enroll without disrupting their\ncareers. The Michigan-based school touted the number of languages\nspoken by its president (four) and the number of classes taught by\nteaching assistants (zero.) Photos of the campus showed students\nlounging around with books on a grassy quad or engaged in rapt\nconversation in its brightly lit modern library. Tuition was\nrelatively reasonable \u2014 $8,500 a year for undergraduates and\n$11,000 a year for graduate students.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\u201cLocated\nin the heart of the automotive and advanced manufacturing center of\nSoutheast Michigan, the University of Farmington provides students\nfrom throughout the world a unique educational experience,\u201d the\nsite informed prospective applicants.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nBut\nthere were no classes taking place at the university, which employed\nno instructors or professors. In court filings that were unsealed\nWednesday, federal prosecutors revealed that the school was being run\nby undercover agents working for U.S. Immigration and Customs\nEnforcement. The fake university had been set up in 2015 as part of\nan elaborate sting operation aimed at ensnaring foreign nationals who\nhad initially come to the United States on student visas. Its\n\u201ccampus\u201d consisted of a small office in a corporate park in the\nnorthwestern Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills, Mich., with no quad\nor library in sight.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nphony university was \u201cbeing used by foreign citizens as a \u2018pay to\nplay\u2019 scheme,\u201d prosecutors allege. After forking over thousands\nof dollars, students would provide immigration authorities with\nevidence that they were enrolled in a full-time educational program.\nThey could then continue to live and work in the United States under\na student visa. But since the University of Farmington didn\u2019t\nexist, they didn\u2019t have the hassle of writing papers, taking tests\nor showing up to class. Students knew that the scheme was illegal\n\u201cand that discretion should be used when discussing the program\nwith others,\u201d prosecutors wrote in their indictment, which was\nfiled Jan. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of\nMichigan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAccording\nto the <\/strong>Detroit\nNews<\/strong><\/a>,\nwhich first reported on the undercover operation, dozens of\nUniversity of Farmington students were arrested on immigration\nviolations on Wednesday as part of a massive nationwide sweep and are\nnow potentially facing deportation. In addition, eight people who\nallegedly worked as \u201crecruiters\u201d for the school and collectively\nhelped at least 600 students to remain in the country under false\npretenses now face federal conspiracy charges.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nICE\ncould not be reached for comment late Wednesday night. It\u2019s unclear\nhow many past or present students could be facing deportation as a\nresult of the sting.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
