A\n62 YEAR OLD NIGERIAN EUGENE ORE, LEGAL RESIDENT OF WISCONSIN HAS\nRUINED HIS LIFE AND THAT OF HIS FAMILY IN AMERICA. HE WAS PART OF A\nFINACIAL CRIMINAL GANG OPERATING DIRECTLY FROM NIGERIA. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ore\nwas sentenced to nearly 5 years in prison for his part in a Nigerian\ntax fraud scheme that drew attention from federal investigators after\na victim in Medford reported it. He has been ordered to pay\nmore than $400,000 in restitution for his part in a Nigerian tax\nfraud scheme that drew attention from federal investigators after a\nvictim in Medford reported it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nU.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon released a\nstatement on Wednesday outlining Curtis Sherman Pethley’s sentence\n(an American accomplice in the crime) and his involvement in an\nillegal enterprise that would land him behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Court\ndocuments revealed that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began\ninvestigating the scheme in May of 2013, when a victim in Medford\nnotified them of suspicious activity. Someone had electronically\nfiled false federal and Oregon state tax returns using her and her\nhusband\u2019s personal information \u2014 including their social security\nnumbers and dates of birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\ntip led the IRS to determine that the fraud scheme must have involved\nco-conspirators, working to gather “a large supply of stolen\nU.S. taxpayer identities,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s\nOffice \u2014 grabbing IRS filing PINs using the victims’ identities,\nstealing prepaid debit cards in the victims’ names, using fake email\naddresses, filing false tax returns, and wiring the stolen funds to\nNigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple\nfraudulent tax returns were filed using the identities of thousands\nof taxpayers in Oregon and Washington. The scheme went on for years,\nand brought in more than $11.6 million for the co-conspirators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Pethley,\nworking along with his Nigerian contact, acquired numerous debit\ncards for use in the scheme including the card connected with the\nMedford, Oregon victim,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. “He\nhelped his Nigerian contact by providing information about the\npreparation of federal income tax returns including how to calculate\nwithholdings on a W-2 form.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pethley\nthen withdrew tax refunds from the prepaid debit cards and, after\ntaking a 10-20 percent cut of the proceeds, wired the money to\nNigeria. He also used those refunds to purchase merchandise and money\norders and sent them to co-conspirators throughout the U.S., as\ninstructed by the ringleaders of the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto the U.S. Attorney’s Office, IRS agents found about 150 prepaid\ndebit cards and almost $50,000 in money orders upon searching\nPethley’s home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pethley\nis already in prison for distributing child pornography from a\nWisconsin case. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of mail\nfraud, conspiracy to commit mail fraud and aggravated identity theft\non August 27, 2018. The Court has ordered that 37 months of Pethley\u2019s\nOregon sentence should run consecutively to the sentence he is\ncurrently serving.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
