When they (the people) cry out for police attention, it is important that we respond positively and swiftly, in the best interests of the community\u201d-Provincial Commissioner,  MEC Jacob Mamabolo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BY\nJUMAI IYIOLA\/SOUTH AFRICAN CRIME CORRESPONDENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE\nHATRED AGAINST NIGERIAN COMMUNITY IN SOUTH AFRICA HAS RISEN TO A\nHIGHER LEVEL AS ANGRY SOUTH AFRICANS TAKE LAWS INTO THEIR HANDS BY\nVIOLENTLY ATTACKING NIGERIANS WHO OWNED JEWELRY STORES, ELECTRONIC\nSHOPS, HOTELS, EVEN AS THOSE properties were set on fire. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nNigeria Union has advised Nigerians leaving in South Africa to avoid\nPretoria Central Business District (CBD) until the Police Authority\ncertify the area safe for foreign nationals.The\nNigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) gave the advice in the wake of\nXenophobic attacks early Wednesday morning in that country.\n\u201cViolent\nlooting and burning of foreign-owned businesses started in the early\nhours of today, Aug. 28, at the Pretoria CBD. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nforeign-owned shops and offices were targeted by angry taxi driver\nrioters, the President of NUSA, Adetola Olubajo said in a statement.\nHis words: \u201cThe\nviolent revolt and looting have been fuelled by the death of a taxi\ndriver allegedly by Tanzania nationals on Tuesday at Pretoria CBD.\nNot\nless than two buildings were burnt by the angry mob. This was done\nafter the stocks in the various shops were looted by the rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nsituation was very volatile this morning but the joint efforts of\nSouth African Metro Police and South African Police Service members\nhelped to curb the violent looting and attacks, although the\nsituation is still tensed at the area as several roads were blocked\nfor motorists.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He\nsaid as at the time he sent the statement, only two Nigerian-owned\nbusinesses were identified to be affected, \u2014 furniture\/electronics\nshop on Sisulu Street and Gold Exchange Business on Lillan Ngoyi\nStreet were looted and burnt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Olubajo\nsaid: \u201cInformation reaching us is that some foreign-owned\nbusinesses have been marked to be attacked over the night. \u201cThe\nmarked foreign-owned businesses include a Nigerian-owned Private\nClinic, Nigerian-owned Motor spares shop and a Nigerian Church among\nothers. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nNigeria High Commission in Pretoria has been informed of the planned\novernight attacks and looting of foreign nationals businesses.\u201cWe\nstrongly advised Nigerians to avoid Pretoria CBD until the South\nAfrican Police Authority has certified the area safe for foreign\nnationals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,\nin a joint statement issued from the offices of Gauteng MEC for\nPublic Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Gauteng Provincial\nCommissioner and Taxi Industry in Tshwane, said it was engaging with\nthe taxi industry following the fatal shooting of a taxi operator in\nthe Pretoria CBD. \u201cGauteng\nPublic Transport and Roads Infrastructure MEC, Jacob Mamabolo,\ntogether with the Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lt.-Gen. Elias\nMawela on Wednesday engaged with the City of Tshwane as well as\nrepresentatives of the taxi industry in Tshwane.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\nfollowed an incident on Tuesday afternoon where a taxi operator was\nfatally shot near the Bloed Long-Distance Taxi Rank in Pretoria.\nThe\ntaxi industry representatives tabled their concerns and raised what\nboth the MEC and Provincial Commissioner believe are genuine\nconcerns, which require urgent attention to ensure safety and\nsecurity within the space in which they operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe\nSouth African Police Service and the Tshwane Metro Police Department\nhave since intensified deployments and will maintain a presence in\nthe CBD to ensure that no further incidents of criminality recur,\u2019\u2019\nthe statement said. In\nthe meantime, 10 suspects have been arrested for possession of\nsuspected stolen property, while an additional seven 7 have been\narrested for public violence, the statement added.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto the statement, the taxi industry representatives have distanced\nthemselves from the incidents of looting that took place in the\nPretoria CBD, and have reiterated on behalf of their operators that\nthere was no aggression on their part.\n\u201cWe\nhad planned for a demonstration to highlight some of our issues with\nthe shooting of one of us, and we believe some criminal elements took\nadvantage and exploited our plan to advance their criminal intent,\u2019\u2019\nsaid Mack Makata of SANTACO. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nalso said that Lt,-Gen.
