IN\nA BID TO FIGHT CORRUPTION AMONG POLITICIANS FROM AFRICA, the British\ngovernment has launched a fresh attempt on Thursday to confiscate\ntens of millions of pounds stolen from an oil-producing state in\nNigeria by its former governor, JAMES IBORI who was convicted of\nlaundering his loot in Britain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

James, who was governor of\nDelta State from 1999 to 2007, pleaded guilty at London’s Southwark\nCrown Court in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering. He\nreceived a 13-year jail sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncase was a rare example of a prominent Nigerian politician being\npunished for his part in the endemic corruption that has blighted\nAfrica’s most populous country for decades. Since then, several other\nNigerian former state governors have been convicted in their own\ncountry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having served half of his\nsentence in pre- and post-trial detention, Ibori was released from\njail in December 2016 and is now back in Nigeria. In 2013, a first\nattempt was made in Britain to confiscate his assets, but it was\naborted after three weeks of hearings because of unresolved legal\ndisputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
