TWENTY-TWO\nNIGERIANS may have lost their precious lives to the dreaded\nCoronavirus in Europe as the pandemic cuts across every nation of the\nworld causing havoc. Corroborating this view, Nigerians in Diaspora\nOrganization Europe, NIDOE made the declaration claiming 18 Nigerians\nso far died in United Kingdom, three in Italy and One in <\/strong>Spain.\n<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto NIDOE, twenty-two Nigerians have so far died of the Coronavirus\n(Covid-19) disease in Europe \u2013 18 in UK, 3 in Italy and 1 in Spain.\nMoreover, no less than 25 others are currently hospitalised because\nof infection with the virus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nIn\na press statement issued by Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, chairman of NIDOE,\nthe figures were compiled from the information provided by the\ncountry chapters of the organisation. Observers believe that the\nfigures are most likely to be much higher since those cited were\ncases that were well known in the respective Nigerian communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAmong\nthe Nigerian victims of the pandemic in Europe are Dr Alfa Saadu, a\nUK-based retired medical doctor who died on Tuesday (31 March) in\nLondon. He was infected with the virus while volunteering in a\nhospital in London. Early in March another Nigerian, Saraju Olumide\nOkunuga, died in the Italian city of Modena. A pathologist, he was\nthe president of Egbe Omo Yoruba in the Emilia Romagna region and the\nvice president of Yoruba National Community Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gbandi\ncalled on Nigerians in Europe to adhere to official social contact\nrestrictions to protect themselves and their families, while\nencouraging community leaders \u2013 be they cultural, religious,\npolitical and social, to mobilise their members for mutual support at\nthis critical period. NIDOE is currently carrying out a campaign,\ntagged NIDSAFE, to encourage Nigerians in Europe to adopt various\nself-help measures to support each other and also lend a helping hand\nto their compatriots at home as a result of the emergency situation\ncaused by the Coronavirus pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\u201cNIDSAFE\ninitiative is primarily conceived to support all measures already put\nin place in our respective countries of residence, and for the NIDOE\ncountry Chair or representative to:
1. Keep a close track of the\nsituation of all Nigerians in their respective countries \u2013 both\nNIDO and non-NIDO members
2. Maintain a very close contact with\nofficials of the Nigerian Embassy in their respective countries
3.\nDisseminate authentic and up-to-date situation report in their\nvarious countries and its implications for Nigeria and Nigerians
4.\nAssist as far as possible with official facilitation that requires\nthe intervention of the authorities when such help is intentionally\nor unintentionally missing and to communicate same to designated\nFederal Government authorities for intervention when necessary
5.\nPrepare the Diaspora for the eventual social and economic long-term\nfallout of the COVID-19 crisis and possible consequences to homeland\ndevelopment.
6. Begin a Diaspora professional mapping in our\nrespective countries for eventual and effective engagement with our\nrespective countries of residence and designated state and federal\nagencies and non-governmental organizations back home in full\npreparation of Nigeria and Nigerians for the long-term effects of the\nCOVID-19 crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
