JUST six hours ago, the death traps on Nigerian roads have led to the untimely transition of six Ekiti State medical doctors, active members of the prestigious Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) along Kaduna highway on their way to attend the 56th annual general conference and delegates meeting slated for Sokoto State. They died on the spot. Their vehicle conveying 14 members somersaulted many times after rear tyre busted on motion and driver applied brake.
The auto crash happened about 60 kilometres to Kaduna, after the rear tyre of the bus of the state chapter of the association busted on motion. The bus transported about 14 passengers. The driver was said to have slammed the brake after the incident, leading to the bus somersaulting.
Sadly these medical doctors are part of a larger Ekiti State NMA members that are owed four months accrues salaries by Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose. This position was confirmed recently Peter Ogunnubi, public relations officer of NMA Lagos, when he reportedly said the affected officials took off from Ekiti state on their way to Sokoto State. His words: “Six of them are already dead. Ekiti doctors urge Fayose to pay their four month salary arrears.” Names of the affected doctors are yet to be disclosed.
Six doctors from the Nigerian Medical Association have died in a ghastly accident on their way to take part in the 56th annual general conference and delegates meeting in Sokoto.
The association is the largest medical organisation in the West African sub-region with over 40,000 members from 36 state branches and the branch from the federal capital territory with about 19,000 in Diaspora. 70% of doctors practice in urban areas where only 30% of the population resides.
