IN the past few weeks in Nigeria, news making headlines had been the controversial squandering of the nation's lump sum of $2.9 billion supposedly meant for arms procurement under the last administration of former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GEJ, but the funds developed wings under the watchful eyes of ex-National Security Adviser, NSA, Colonel Sambo Dasuki.
Not wanting his hard-earned reputation tarnished, soft-spoken Jonathan during a conversational forum in Washington DC, United States few days ago co-hosted by the National Democratic Institute and the Center for Strategic and International Studies, doing an appraisal of the 'Presidential elections and democratic consolidation in Africa stirred honest next by breaking his silence that he did not authorize any $2billion for arms procurement, contrary to the position of his former NSA, Dasuki.
Jonathan, Nigeria's former President Disowns Sambo Dasuki
Disowning his former NSA, Jonathan said: “I did not award any $2billion contract for procurement of weapons. Where did the money come from?” Suggesting the claims by incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is a wild goose chase built on falsehood, he said: “Sometimes I feel sad when people mention these figures. When the President (Buhari) paid his official visit to the United States, there were some figures that was mentioned that I don't believe. How could he alleged that $150billion was stolen missing) by previous administrations and Americans would not know where such money is hidden? $150billion is not N150billion. He did not say my government, but said previous administrations. People play politics with very serious issues. Of course we brought international audit teams, forensic auditors and they did not see that.”
GEJ avoids confrontation with President Buhari
Averting any confrontation with Buhari's government, Jonathan said: “I wanted to keep away from the public at least in the next 12 months.” Meanwhile Dasuki responds back in a statement issued on Wednesday, where he claimed that all contracts and accruing payments were made based on the approval of the ex-President Jonathan, adding that due process and military procurement regulations were followed in all transactions.
Dasuki replies: 'All Contracts, Accruing Payments made by ex-President Jonathan'
Former NSA's statement read: “Nigerians should note that all the services generated the types of equipment needed, sourced suppliers most times and after considerations by the Office of the NSA, the President will approve application for payment.”
NOTE: Nigerians in Diaspora are presently asking questions willing to know who is lying between Jonathan and Dasuki. Only time will uncover the truth.
