EXCEPT for providence, Hafiz Ringim, Nigeria’s garrulous and boastful former Inspector General of Police (IGP) may be ‘face-to-face’ with his phobia, which is the fear of returning to Nigeria and the likelihood to be ‘smoked-out’ by the Satanic, blood sucking terrorists, notoriously known as ‘Boko Haram’ dealing heavy punches of terrorism on Nigeria Up-North. His application for Asylum in United Kingdom (UK) filed at UK Border Agency early February 2012- a month after President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria sacked him for his ‘incompetence’ in combating terrorism as the nation’s chief police officer is gradually facing hard times.
British Govt gathers Fresh Evidence
Even though, Ringim submitted several terrorism incidence in Nigeria to show that the nation is unsafe, Naija Standard gathered that UK Border Agency, as a matter of principle and factual substance; are insisting on conducting new investigations on claims made by Ringim and collating fresh evidence to ascertain the real reasons Nigeria’s former police chief is desperate to seek UK Asylum.
Sources inside UK Border Control Agency informs Naija Standard that the British Government is doing all they can in ensuring that “Ringim would be giving Asylum as a Refugee if there is enough evidence that proves same.” Meanwhile the source said “The UK also adheres to the European Convention on Human Rights, which prevents us sending someone to a country where there is a real risk that they will be exposed to torture, or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
Ringim quiet lifestyles
Naija Standard learnt that in view of the phobia and circumstances surrounding Ringim’s shameful exit from the country, the immediate past IGP), now moves so quietly around his neighborhood in London, occasionally visiting friends and family relations without any flamboyancy. Ringim, our correspondent gathered tells whoever cares to listen that he did not know why Boko Haram members are after his life. He is often reported to be saying: “I don’t know what I have done to Boko Haram in Nigeria. They are after my life. After I have given so much of service in police to my nation, is this how my life would be wasted in Nigeria?”
The former police chief’s request is reportedly anchored on fears that Islamic militants, Boko Haram, may kill him should he return to Nigeria. Ringim reportedly told the agency that his lucky escape in the June 2011 bombing of the Force Headquarters in Abuja, by Boko Haram, a few days after he threatened in Maiduguri, Borno State, to crush the group, fuelled fears he was a prime target.
The ex-IGP was also said to have drawn the attention of the British officials to the June 6, 2011 murder of his deputy in office, Alhaji Abubakar Ningi. Also killed in the attack were Ningi’s police orderly and driver. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the killings. Sources said that he informed the British agency that former military chiefs have not been spared by the Islamic militants.
He reportedly cited the November 2012 murder of a civil war combatant, General Mamman Shuwa. Ringim, under whose tenure the United Nations’ office in Abuja was bombed, reportedly told the UK officials that returning to Nigeria was akin to sending him to certain death.

Undercover investigation by Naija Standard revealed that Ringim’s final aim is to allegedly ‘dump’ Nigeria’s citizenship for British, once his asylum application sails through, since he reportedly vowed and confessed in few of his close friends ‘never to step foot on Nigeria soil anymore.’
