HEINOUS crimes that were hitherto seen as forbidden in Nigerian culture has now ‘literally’ grown wings and become a ‘fad’ among a section of Nigerian community in the United States. From uncontrolled anger to provocation, ‘male-domineering ego’ and inferiority complex, some of these Nigerian born men who later became ‘Nigerian-Americans’ through marriage and ‘visa-lottery’ have taken laws into their hands and are now being tried for various degrees of murder.
Very regrettable was the case of Martin Ebegbodi, a-63 year Ibo man married to Dr. Isioma, nee Unokanjo, a-36 year old Medical Resident Physician, a Nigerian-American in West Harris County, Texas. Their neighbors felt that their marriage was made in heaven as the husband dot over her on every weekend taking her to ‘Theaters and Cinema houses’. But few weeks ago, at exactly 3:00am, precisely on March 22, 2014, Egbegbodi unknowingly facing serious ‘job-placement’ challenges had a face-off with his wife over dinner, whom before her gruesome death was the bread winner of the family and felt so tired after she closed late from work on that ‘black day.’
Eye witness told Naija Standard that on her return from work, Isioma had taken time out to explain to her husband why she came late due to patients she had to attend to, and was not able to prepare dinner, a livid Egbegbodi had ran into their bedroom and brought out a gun to shoot the wife-the woman died on the spot. His eyes became very clear and went to a neighbor’s house nearby to beg them to call police for his arrest.
Pronto, Harris County Sherrif showed up to arrest Ebegbodi obviously looking remorseful. He was handcuffed and taken away from their house at 19700 block of Youpon Leaf Way. He is presently on trial for high degree murder. They were married on February 11, 2005 in Harris County, Texas with Marriage Certificate number 018430. The deceased was born in Nigeria in 1978, did her secondary school at Queens College, Yaba, Lagos. She was a Medical Resident Physician at Marshfield Clinic, Texas.
Babatope Owoseni kills 9 months Pregnant Wife
This indeed is a sad story. Another Nigerian man, Babatope Owoseni was arrested in East Orange, New Jersey in connection with the mystery death of his wife, Fatoumata, a-29 year old woman who was 9 months pregnant as at the time her husband allegedly killed her. She was found by neighbors to be unresponsive at their 39 South Munn Avenue apartment. The police is still conducting investigation and Owoseni has been charged with her murder and he is being held without bail at the Essex County Corrections Facility.
Naija Standard investigation confirmed that wife killing by Nigerian husbands is fast spreading in Texas and the Nigerian community is feeling nonchalant.
