One inspiring example is Simon Petrus, a young Namibian inventor who gained international recognition after developing a working communication prototype capable of making voice calls without relying on a conventional SIM card or purchased mobile airtime.
While still a secondary school student, Simon spent nearly two years designing and assembling the prototype using discarded components recovered from old telephones, television sets, radios, and other electronic devices. Without access to an advanced laboratory or significant financial support, he transformed electronic waste into a multifunctional communication system through creativity, technical skill, and perseverance.
Unlike conventional mobile phones that depend on cellular networks and prepaid airtime, Simon’s prototype reportedly communicates using radio-frequency technology. The innovation was developed with rural communities in mind, particularly areas where mobile network coverage is weak or communication services are expensive and unreliable.
