In an exclusive interview with Egede, he said: “The health sector in America cannot be compared with what is obtainable in Nigeria. Nevertheless, the health sector over here is comparatively okay, but not up to that point, where people can guaranty health care no matter what the situation is. As a Dentist in the United States, I can categorically say, that I am fulfilled to practice what I have the passion for.”
Egede’s journey to United States
Naija Standard learnt from Egede of his adventure into America. His words: “Before I can into the States, I have been a Dentist from Nigeria. When I came into this country in 2002, I went back to school to get my license situated, so I will be able to practice dentistry in this country. As a Dentist in America is truly a dream fulfilled since I have always wanted to migrate to US to continue with my education. “I remember vividly telling my cousin who is now a medical practitioner in Nigeria, that if I want to further my career in Dentistry, I will like to do it overseas, otherwise I will switch over to medical school to be medical Doctor. Thank God I stuck with Dentistry, because now I find fulfillment in what I do.
How he overcame American Accent barrier
This owner of Bethel Family Dentistry in Texas did not hide how he overcame the hurdle of American accent by explaining that “The major challenge I had initially was the challenge of my accent. I have always thought that I will not be able to communicate and that people will find it difficult to understand my accent, but I overcame that with the help of God, when I went to school in New York. I started having and hanging out with friends in other to hear and understand how to communicate better. “Also, the challenge of being a Black man from Africa, I thought people of other decent will not want to have anything to do with me, but guess what?, that is not true, the truth of the matter is that, if you are good at what you do, people will always come to you regardless of what you are.
Challenges at Initial Phase of his business in USA
Egede recalled that “As it is with every business, the initial phase is always difficult because you have to contend with already existing practices and also to get the patients to your clinic coupled with rigorous marketing. In the true sense of it, my clients cut across all nationality. Daily, I see every of my patients as ‘one big family’ regardless of your nationality, but the bulk of my patient pools are Africa Americans and Hispanic.
His American Medical Memberships
Of his medical associations, he said “I am a member of the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association and the Dallas Society Dental Council. I don’t think I can really lay hold to my high point in my career, because I am still looking forward to developing myself and fine tuning my skills in the practice of Dentistry with the revolution going on in the dental world.”
His dreams of Overseas as a young boy
“As a young boy, I have always wanted to travel abroad for greener pastures and to experience the other side of the world. But while in college back home in Nigeria, precisely in dental school, I started nursing this ambition of travelling Abroad to further my career in life. I am grateful to God for not allowing me to switch from Dentistry to Medical school. For now, I enjoy with passion what I do as a Dentist.”
Contribution to American Economy
Egede smiled and said “By the grace of God, I believe I am contributing significantly to the American economy and also rendering health care services to the citizens of this great nation. As long as God gives me life, I look forward to doing great things and giving back to the community.”
His Passion for evangelizing the message of Jesus Christ at work
Believing in the philosophy that ‘doctors consults, only God heals’, he shares his undying passion and love for Jesus Christ in his hospital, “It is the most awesome you can imagine. I am so proud to display and advertise Jesus Christ in my clinic. In my clinic, right at the corner of the front desk is a rack of tracts displayed for anybody to grab. It is so amazing seeing people going for it and feeling free to discuss the lord Jesus Christ in my clinic,” observed Egede.
What he wants change in the American Health Sector?
This soft-spoken Dentist desire a change in the dental health sector by saying “I will like to see a more effective way to run the sector, to get rid-off these marketers who just scout for patients, thereby making the Dentists look like touts. Rather a professional ought to be put in place, to see to the fact that Dentists are paid by insurance companies in a prompt manner for services rendered. Also, that Dentists should conduct themselves in a more professional manner and don’t allow themselves to be controlled by these touts that call themselves marketers.”
Advice to Nigerian Govt on State-of-the-Nation
He told Naija Standard that “The Nigeria government should ensure a free and fair election and maintain the peace in the land, because Nigeria belongs to us all. Election should be the right of the generality of the people to vote into power credible leader that will lead and not the imposition of somebody without vision on the generality of the people, thereby mortgaging the destiny of the nation.” Egede believes “to stay healthy, dentally is to keep up with good oral hygiene practice and to cultivate the habit of regular dental visit for routine checkup. As it is always said, to prevent the development of caries, is to not only keep up with you being checked up, but to avoid certain refined food products by cultivating the habit of eating less sugary stuffs.”
