ALI Modu Sheriff, two-time former governor of Borno State regarded the ‘longest’ serving executive governor of the state is presently dragged into controversy over the ‘discordant-tunes’ playing out from the tertiary institution he claimed he attended in London where he acquired Insurance, Banking and Finance degree. This raging controversy surrounds the authenticity and validity of his degree from London School of Business in 1980; bearing in mind he attended Government Secondary School, Bama (1974–1979) and in 1981, he joined his father’s company as a director, later becoming Managing Director.
Modu Sheriff’s profile reads in Wikipedia: “Ali Modu Sheriff was born in Ngala Town, Ngala Local Government Area, Borno State in 1956. His father was the business tycoon Galadima Modu Sheriff. He attended Government Secondary School, Bama (1974–1979). He attended the London School of Business, where he studied Insurance, Banking and Finance. In 1981, he joined his father’s construction company as a Director, later becoming Managing Director. In 1985, he registered his first company. His companies include Meroil Organisation and Union Chase.
In 1990, he became a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). In 1997, he joined the National Republican Convention (NRC). He was a member of the Constitutional Conference and chaired the committee on states and local government.”
Still in Wikipedia, his political career in Nigeria read: “Ali Modu Sheriff was elected Senator representing Borno Central on the platform of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) during General Sani Abacha‘s military regime. After democracy was restored, in April 1999 he was again elected Senator, Borno Central on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2003, he ran for Governor of Borno State on the ANPP platform and won. He was re-elected in 2007 and sworn in on 29 May, 2007. In both cases, he defeated the PDP candidate Kashim Ibrahim-Imam.”

Naija Standard investigation revealed that this educational certificate claimed to have been acquired by Modu Sheriff for his entire political career may allegedly be ‘fake.’ In an inquiry sent to London Business School and Finance regarding the studentship status of Modu Sheriff, Sue Hoof, Director of Accreditations & Compliance, London Business School and Finance-FCMA, CGMA, MAAT, PGCE replied our American Editors: “We were only established as a college in 2003 and so he could not have studied with us in 1980. I am unable to verify this.”
Similarly, we wrote to London Business School, Naija Standard got a reply where the institution decided to keep sealed mum and diplomatically shift the answer to London School of Business and Finance; a varsity that earlier distanced itself from ever awarding any degree as stated above.”
Naija Standard writes University of London
Also, we have written to University of London, being that London Business School (LBS) is a business school and a constituent college of the institution to verify the authenticity of Modu Sheriff’s degree.
