SHADES of furore, bickering, antagonism and negative politicking to expect is presently playing out in Nigeria, as the visit of the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan to the former capital of the nation-Lagos few days ago for political campaign has been singled out for criticism by Babatunde Raji Fashola, BRF, Governor of Lagos State as the bane behind the ‘deadly attack and rampage’ by armed robbers in Lekki, a suburb for the elites in Island where three policemen were wounded, a young fish seller was killed and unspecified sum of money stolen by these agents of darkness. Nigeria’s President, GEJ, have outrightly put the blame back at the door step of Fashola, while describing Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, national political leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, as “Master of Propaganda, a Liar and a strong enemy of the country,” for allegedly claiming that Jonathan ‘offered him slot as Vice President in an Interim Government.’
‘Tinubu Lies, Deceiving the Public on ING’-Presidency
Having had enough of ‘invectives and derogatory statement’ from APC, Jonathan captured Tinubu’s character as a liar, when he explained that, “Those who seem determined to pull down this country with lies, with black information are the enemies of this country and do not deserve to be given the opportunity to occupy, to enjoy opportunities that they do not deserve”.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati on behalf of the Presidency said Jonathan is a democratically elected president, his ambition can never be to lead an Interim National Government, ING, under any guise.
His words: “People that have been following the news, knows the truth, except they have chosen willfully to play deaf and dumb. They know the facts are there that President Jonathan has said again and again, that an idea of an Interim National Government is preposterous and to use his exact words also treasonable; and that he has never anywhere discussed that idea with anybody and he has never proposed it at any forum. He is going to this presidential elections on the basis of the records of his achievements, on the conviction that he has served Nigerians well and the overwhelming majority of Nigerians are appreciative of the achievements of his administration and are therefore solidly behind him and will vote for him massively on March 28.
“Therefore, he has no reason whatsoever to support such an unconstitutional proposition as Interim National Government which in its fullest will amount to assault on democratic principles under this circumstance”.
He explained that an attempt to de-construct the statement that purportedly emanated from Tinubu’s office would readily expose the absurd nature of the claim.
The former Chairman of Guardian newspaper said: “The absolutely, ridiculous nature of it in the sense that given the configuration of Nigeria, is not likely, totally impossible to have an ING arrangement in which you will have a southerner as the president and then another southerner as vice president. It is absurd. It is not something that is likely to work given the nature of our politics.
“We are in the know that Tinubu’s camp putting out that statement were so much in a hurry to engage in their usual game of deceiving the public of propagandaism of the current electoral process, that the emptiness, the hollowness, the shallowness of their proposition escaped them.”
Fashola’s position
Obviously angry Fashola said: “We lost three policemen in a robbery in Lekki-first of its kind in a long time. But it was sad to have seen all our personnel and all our service vehicles deployed to protect one man. All the vehicles we bought for police were stationed to receive the President in Lagos; while citizens were left vulnerable.”
It is on record that these gang of robbers, fully armed, stormed the First City Monument Bank, FCMB, on Admiralty Way in Lekki, Lagos on Thursday last week killing three policemen and a teenager selling fish to make ends meet.
